Key Highlights

Whale Watching

The whale watching cruise departs from Mirissa at 6:00 AM and heads out into open Indian Ocean water where blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins move freely through the sea. Seven species of whale and two species of dolphin have been spotted on these waters, with the best season running from November to April. Mirissa is 63 kilometers from Haritha, and the early morning drive and boat ride are completely worth the effort.

Rainforest Trekking

Sinharaja is the last remaining primary tropical rainforest in Sri Lanka and carries UNESCO World Heritage status for good reason. Giant squirrels, toque macaques, rare birds, and plant life that exists nowhere else in the country fill the forest, and the trekking trails are open throughout the year. The rainforest is 115 kilometers from Haritha, and comfortable footwear is the only thing you need to bring along for the trail.

Jungle Spa

The Jungle Spa at Haritha is set in a tropical environment where the jungle breeze and the sound of the lake water become part of the treatment itself. Everything used in the spa is 100 percent natural and locally sourced, covering herbal baths, body treatments, manicures, pedicures, and personalized Ayurvedic consultations with a resident doctor on-site. It is a restorative experience that feels completely connected to the natural landscape around it.

Yoga and Wellness

The Yoga Pavilion at Haritha overlooks the lake and offers a calm and beautiful setting for daily practice, open to guests of all experience levels. A visit to the local monastery nearby adds a meaningful spiritual dimension to the stay for anyone interested in meditation. A fully equipped 24-hour gym is also available on-site for guests who want to stay active in a different way throughout the stay.

Learn to Surf

The southern coast has surf breaks that work well for all levels, from complete beginners to surfers looking for something more challenging. Certified coaching is available just 3 kilometers away in Hikkaduwa, with January to April being the most reliable season for good waves. Appropriate swimwear is all that is required to get out on the water.

The Moonstone Mine

Tucked into the jungle of Mitiyagoda 13 kilometers from the property, the ancient moonstone mine is one of Sri Lanka's most unexpected and genuinely interesting stops. The visit takes you through the full process from mining to polishing, and the workshop and retail outlet on-site give you the chance to see and take home the finished stones. Opening hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily.

Madu River Safari

The Madu River boat safari moves through 61 hectares of mangrove waterways with stops at Kothduwa Temple, Cinnamon Island, and a floating fish farm that also operates as a spa. The river is alive with birds, reptiles, and tropical plant life, and the pace of the cruise gives you plenty of time to look around properly. The river is 30 kilometers from Haritha, with departures at 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM.

Turtle Hatchery

Seven kilometers from Haritha, the sea turtle hatchery works to protect and rehabilitate five turtle species that nest along the southern shoreline, including the Leatherback, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, Green Turtle, and Hawksbill. Visiting gives you a real and close look at the conservation effort going into keeping these animals alive and well on the island. The hatchery welcomes visitors daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Stilt Fishing

At Talpe Beach, 27 kilometers from the property, traditional stilt fishermen stand balanced on wooden poles above the surf and wait for their catch with the kind of patience that is genuinely impressive to watch. Sunrise and sunset bring out the best in the scene, and the light over the water at those hours makes the whole experience feel very cinematic. May to September is the ideal season to visit.

More about this escape

Haritha has a warmth that you pick up on before you have even seen your room. Every guest is assigned a dedicated villa master on arrival who handles everything from arranging activities to sending menus ahead of meals so nothing feels like an effort. The Jungle Spa runs Ayurvedic programs built around a personal consultation with a resident doctor, covering wellness treatments, dosha balancing, and daily Hatha yoga tailored to each guest. The restaurant uses produce grown directly on the property, and the food has earned consistent praise from guests who were not expecting it to be as good as it is.

A 20-meter outdoor pool, fitness center, bar, and lounge with library are all available throughout the stay. Peacocks, monkeys, land monitors, and squirrels pass through the grounds daily, and even a quiet morning on the villa terrace ends up feeling like something worth remembering.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Haritha

After arriving and meeting the villa master, the afternoon is a good time to explore the villa, take a swim in the plunge pool, and get comfortable with the property before anything else. A late afternoon Ayurvedic consultation with the resident doctor sets up a personalized wellness plan for the days ahead. Dinner at the restaurant that evening, made from the garden's own produce, is a warm and very good first meal at Haritha.

Meals: Dinner at the resort restaurant

Activities: Villa and property exploration, pool time, Ayurvedic consultation

Day 2: Ocean in the Morning, River in the Afternoon

A morning scuba diving session off Hikkaduwa opens the day with coral reefs and marine life a short drive from the property before heading back for lunch. The afternoon belongs to the Madu River boat safari, winding through mangrove waterways and past Cinnamon Island and Kothduwa Temple with the 4:00 PM departure. A yoga session or in-villa Ayurvedic treatment closes the evening out nicely before dinner at the resort.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch at the resort, dinner at the resort

Activities: Scuba diving, Madu River boat safari, yoga or Ayurvedic treatment

Day 3: Turtles, Moonstones, and One Last Swim

The last morning starts with a visit to the sea turtle hatchery down the coast, where the conservation work being done for five turtle species is genuinely moving to see up close. A stop at the Mitiyagoda moonstone mine follows, offering one of Sri Lanka's most fascinating craft experiences before the drive back to Haritha. A final lunch at the restaurant and a last hour in the plunge pool is a very easy and satisfying way to end the stay.

Good to Know

What to Pack for the Climate

Bring lightweight clothes that dry fast since the air is humid. Pack reef-safe sunscreen with high SPF, water shoes for rocky areas, and a light rain jacket for afternoon showers. A rash guard protects your skin during water activities.

Ocean Conditions and Seasons

The best time for diving and water sports is October to April when the water is clearest and warmest. During other months, the ocean can be rough with stronger currents so discuss activity timing with your villa master at arrival.

Wildlife on the Grounds

Peacocks, monkeys, land monitors, and squirrels move through the property daily. Enjoy watching them from a distance but do not feed or approach them. Some animals can be aggressive if they expect food.

Getting to Activities

Most activities are within 30 kilometers of Haritha. The resort arranges all transportation so you do not need to worry about directions or driving. Your villa master coordinates timing and bookings.
