Key Highlights

Shey Village Walk

Before Leh became the capital, Shey was the most important town in Ladakh. Walking through the village today, old monasteries and buildings still tell the story of what life was like back then. The Shey Palace sits at the heart of it all and was actually one of the inspirations for Shel's design. Spending a whole day here lets you take in the history at your own pace without feeling rushed.

Family Picnics

Picnics are a big part of how people enjoy life here in Ladakh. All it takes is some food and a good spot near the Indus River to make for a wonderful afternoon. The cool breeze from the water keeps things comfortable while birds circle above in the open sky. It is one of those simple days that ends up feeling like one of the best parts of the trip.

Hemis Monastery Hike

Hemis is one of the largest monasteries in the area and a great place to learn about the history of Buddhism in Ladakh. Walking through the museum and different temples inside gives a clear picture of how the region grew spiritually over the years. After seeing the complex, a trail leads up to quiet meditation caves with views that take your breath away. The whole hike feels peaceful and inspiring at the same time.

Pangong Lake Visit

Pangong is a lake so blue and still that it almost does not look real. A day trip here is one of the most popular things to do in Ladakh, and for good reason. Since it sits outside the main city, there are fewer people around, which makes the visit feel more special. The road leading to the lake winds through stunning open land, and the drive itself is just as enjoyable as the destination.

Local Festivals

Every year, monasteries across Ladakh come alive with colorful festivals that celebrate the culture of the region. Performers put on masked dances and act out stories that have been told for generations. Being there to watch it all happen in person is something that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. It is one of those rare experiences that people remember for a very long time.

Bird Watching

Shey Marshes sit close to Shel and are known as one of the best places in Ladakh to watch birds. Early mornings here are filled with birdsong, and a gentle walk through the marshes can reveal many different species. Some of these birds actually make their home within the grounds of Shel itself. For anyone who loves being outdoors and enjoys nature, this is a perfect way to start the day.

Momo Cooking Class

Learning to make momos with the chef at Shel is a fun and hands-on experience. The dish itself is simple, but getting the shape just right turns out to be trickier than most people expect. It is a great way to learn a little about Ladakhi food while also having a good time in the kitchen. Guests usually walk away laughing and with a new recipe to try at home.

Thiksey Prayers

Thiksey Monastery is only about ten minutes from Shel and welcomes visitors to watch the morning prayers. The deep sound of cymbals and chanting fills the temple and creates an atmosphere that is hard to forget. For those who do not want to wake up too early, the rooftop of the monastery offers stunning views during sunset instead. No matter which time you choose to visit, it ends up being one of the standout moments of the trip.

Tso Kar Lake

Tso Kar is one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world and sits far away from the usual tourist spots. The surrounding area is home to diverse bird species and plant life, which is why it was recently designated a special environmental area. Getting there takes some effort, but the reward is a landscape that feels completely untouched and wide open. For anyone looking to see a quieter and less crowded side of Ladakh, this is the place to go.

More about this escape

This retreat is a chance to slow down and take in the raw beauty of Ladakh while feeling right at home. Shel was assembled from materials salvaged from the original structure that once stood on the site, so the connection to the place runs deep. The rooms are kept simple and open so that the mountain views outside remain the real star of the show. Since only one group stays at a time, the library, rooftop, and garden are completely yours to enjoy.

Shel is set on a private piece of land in the village of Shey, right next to the Indus River and the Shey marshes. About twenty minutes from Leh town, it is a quiet, comfortable base for exploring everything Ladakh has to offer.

Good to Know

High Altitude Care

Leh is over 11,000 feet above sea level, where oxygen levels are lower. Your first afternoon should be quiet with lots of water and no heavy activities. This helps prevent headaches and nausea from altitude sickness.

Whole Property Privacy

Only one group stays at Shel at any time. The three suites do not share with other guests, so the library, rooftop, gardens, and all common areas are reserved exclusively for your group during your visit.

Temperature Swings

Days can be warm, but nights drop below freezing even in June and July. Layer your clothing with thermal underwear, fleece, and a windproof jacket. Dry air at this altitude needs extra lip balm and moisturizer, too.

Chef Preferences

Meals are prepared based on what you like to eat. Tell the staff about dietary needs, food allergies, or favorite dishes when you check in so the chef can plan your breakfast and dinner accordingly.

About your stay

Shel Ladakh

Shey - Chuchot Rd, Shey, Ladakh

Shel sits on a quiet stretch of land just a short walk from the Indus River, about twenty minutes from Leh. It is tucked into the Himalayas on all sides, making it one of the most peaceful places to stay in the whole region.

Your Accommodation

Shel has three suites, and each one draws its look and feel from a different part of Ladakh. Local materials like wood, mud, and soft textiles are used throughout to keep the rooms feeling warm and grounded. Large windows and skylights bring natural light in all day, and some rooms even let you gaze at the night sky from your bed. The shared spaces, including a library, rooftop, dining area, and garden, are all kept private and available only to the guests staying there. Each suite has its own personality, and together they offer a different way to experience the beauty and culture of Ladakh.

Zanskar, The Copper Valley Suite: This spacious suite takes its style from the copper valley it shares a name with, and warm copper tones can be seen throughout the room. The beds can be set up as twins or one large bed, and the wide balcony looks out at the Himalayas during the day and a sky full of stars at night.

Changthang, The Nomadic Suite: Inspired by the open northern plateau of Ladakh, this suite has a clean and minimal look with items carefully chosen from across the region. The best part is the sky roof above the double bed, which lets guests fall asleep looking straight up at the Milky Way.

Nubra, The Valley of Flowers Suite: This suite is named after a valley known for its sand dunes and wild flowers, and it brings that same mix of simplicity and color into the room. The double bed sits close to a west-facing balcony, giving the perfect spot to watch the sun go down each evening.
