Turtle & Whale Watching

Rekawa Beach attracts five different types of sea turtles during nesting season, including the large leatherback turtle. These endangered animals come onto the sand at night to lay their eggs, then return to the ocean. Whale-watching boats leave from nearby and have very high success rates for seeing Blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, along with Sperm whales and dolphins.

Good to Know

Turtle Watching Guidelines

Keep your voice low and turn off flashlights when watching turtles nest at Rekawa Beach. Guides use red lights because regular white light confuses the turtles and can make them return to the ocean without laying eggs.

Water Activity Safety

The lagoon has calm, protected waters that are ideal for kayaking. The open ocean can have stronger currents, so follow your guide's advice about where to swim and snorkel each day.

Temple Visit Requirements

Mulkirigala is an active place of worship. Wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering areas with Buddha statues and ancient cave paintings.

Your Fishing Catch

The hotel kitchen will cook any fish you catch during the morning fishing trip. They prepare it using traditional Sri Lankan spices and cooking styles for your lunch or dinner at no additional charge.

About your stay

Halcyon Mawella

Kotuwaththawewatta Moraketiara Tangalle

The hotel is situated on Mawella Beach in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka near the town of Tangalle. The location sits between the Indian Ocean and a large lagoon filled with lily pads and surrounded by jungle. Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is about one hour away by car, while Colombo's main airport takes roughly three hours to reach.

Your Accommodation

Halcyon Mawella has a total of eight rooms plus one private villa, keeping guest numbers small throughout the stay. Standard Rooms and Deluxe Rooms are divided between the ground floor, with private terraces, and the upper floor, with balconies. All rooms have traditional thatched roofs that allow ocean breezes to flow through naturally. Family Rooms include larger four-poster beds and raised mezzanine areas where children can sleep separately. The Lumi Villa offers three bedrooms facing the water and works well for groups or families who want their own private space. The design uses reclaimed materials throughout, with old doors, window frames, and wooden columns taken from traditional Sri Lankan homes and given new life in the buildings. For safety reasons, the hotel does not accept children under six years old.
