Key Highlights

Exceptional Wildlife Spotting

The numbers tell an amazing story here because Bardia went from just 18 tigers in 2009 to over 125 today. Your chances of actually seeing a tiger are remarkably high since they use this exact corridor to move between different parts of their territory. Besides tigers, the park protects one-horned rhinos that look like prehistoric creatures and massive Asian elephants that sometimes swim across the river channels.

Burhan Sundowner

The sundowner happens at a beautiful setup right next to the Geruwa River where the camp sits. Guests can enjoy cocktails, mocktails, and fresh juices with snacks while the sun sets behind the forests and grasslands. This peaceful time often brings animals down to drink at the riverbanks, turning sunset into an unexpected wildlife show.

Unique Glamping Experience

Most camps build permanent structures that sit empty half the year, but Burhan takes a completely different approach. The tents only exist when you book them, which sounds strange until you realize it means the land stays wild for the animals most of the time. When the tents are up, they're surprisingly spacious with proper beds and even hot showers, just without walls so you can see the stars while you wash.

Guided Activities

Mornings usually start with a jeep safari into the national park where the guides know exactly where to find fresh tiger tracks. The walking safaris get your heart pumping because you're on foot in tiger country with just a guide and a stick. River activities switch things up completely since you're floating silently past animals that don't even notice you're there.

Wildlife River Rafting through Jungles

The rafting here isn't about getting wet or excited by rapids. Instead, the raft drifts so quietly that a rhino might be standing knee-deep in the water just twenty feet away and won't even care. Birds are everywhere along the banks, and the river attracts everything from dolphins to crocodiles.

Authentic Cultural Experiences

The Tharu people have lived alongside these forests and animals for hundreds of years, which is why their stories and dances matter so much. When they perform at night, you're not watching some show created for tourists but seeing real traditions passed down through generations. The money from your visit goes directly to their community projects and helps pay for the teams that stop poachers from killing wildlife.

More about this escape

TIME magazine picked Burhan as one of the world's best places in 2024, and the reason is pretty clear once you visit. The whole operation runs on the idea that tourism should help nature instead of hurting it. When camps don't have guests, the staff takes down the tents and lets the elephants walk through, which is exactly how it should work.

The location puts you right in the middle of a wildlife highway where tigers, rhinos, and elephants travel daily between the forests and river. What makes Burhan special is how the team treats every guest like family, with guides who genuinely love what they do and know these forests by heart. Sushila and the other naturalists don't just point out animals but tell you the stories behind each species and why protecting them matters. The food surprises everyone because it tastes like restaurant quality while using vegetables and herbs grown just down the road. Everything about your stay helps the local Tharu people earn a living and keeps poachers out of the park.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & River Adventure

Your trip starts with a short flight to Nepalgunj, then a drive through farmland that gradually turns into wilderness. The Blackbuck Sanctuary sits right along the road, so you'll probably see wild animals before reaching camp. Once you arrive, there's time to try paddleboards or kayaks on the river. The afternoon winds down with drinks on the deck while the sun sets. Dinner brings out dishes made from ingredients bought at the local market that morning.

Meals: Dinner

Activities: Paddle boarding, kayaking, river activities, sundowner

Day 2: Full-Day Jungle Safari

An early start gets you into Bardia National Park while animals are still active. The open jeep lets you see in every direction as the guide drives slowly through different habitats. Lunch gets eaten in the shade somewhere deep in the park. Later you'll visit a Tharu village to see their traditional longhouse and watch cultural demonstrations. The day ends back at camp with everyone sharing what they saw.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Activities: Full-day jungle safari, guided walk, Tharu cultural experience

Day 3: River Safari & Rhino Tracking

Dawn breaks over the river as you push off in a boat. Breakfast tastes better after being out on the water. The morning walk focuses on finding rhinos, which means following their tracks through tall grass. Making a clay print of a tiger's paw gives you something to remember the experience. The rest of the day is yours to either rest or explore more.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Activities: Sunrise river safari, rhino tracking bushwalk, tiger paw imprint making, sundowner

Day 4: Karnali River Rafting

The drive to the rafting start takes you through small villages. Once on the water, the raft moves with the current peacefully. Wildlife shows up constantly because every animal needs to drink. By the time you float back to camp, you've covered miles of jungle you'd never see from a road.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Activities: Karnali River rafting, wildlife observation

Day 5: Departure

The last breakfast comes with mixed feelings because the jungle has probably grown on you. If your flight leaves late, the morning village walk shows you how Tharu families actually live. The drive back to the airport feels quick compared to when you arrived.

Meals: Breakfast

Activities: Community walk (optional)

Good to Know

Camp Design

The tents are temporary structures that get removed when no guests are staying. This lets elephants and other animals move through the area naturally without permanent buildings blocking their paths.

Walking Safety

Bushwalks take place in areas where tigers and rhinos live. Always stay with your guide, follow their instructions immediately, and avoid making sudden movements or loud noises during the walk.

River Conditions

The Karnali River rafting is calm and focuses on wildlife watching rather than rapids. You will float quietly downstream while the guide points out animals along the banks and in the water.

Meal Times

Breakfast starts early before morning activities, lunch happens either at camp or during full-day safaris, and dinner is served after evening activities. The kitchen uses vegetables and herbs from nearby farms.

About your stay

Burhan Wilderness Camps

Kailashi Bardia, Nepal

The camp occupies its own small conservation zone inside the bigger Khata Wildlife Corridor. Two branches of the Karnali River wrap around this piece of land, creating a natural island where animals gather because the water stays clean year-round.

Your Accommodation

The camp offers three different ways to sleep here depending on what you're comfortable with. Regular safari tents give you the full camping experience with canvas walls and outdoor showers, but the beds inside are real mattresses and there's even a desk if you need to work. One luxury treehouse sits up in the branches with a king bed and a bathtub on the balcony where you can soak while elephants drink from the river below. Another treehouse has two beds and makes more sense for friends or families traveling together since it includes a small kitchen area. Every accommodation comes stocked with the basics like bug spray, flashlights, and thick blankets for when the temperature drops at night. The open design means you're never separated from the jungle, which is exactly the point of being here.
