More about this escape
Virsa Baltistan is a boutique hotel that took seven years to build using only traditional methods and materials from the surrounding area. The property sits in Turtuk, a village near the Pakistan border that was once an important stop on the ancient Silk Route. With just 14 rooms available, the experience feels small and personal. Guests eat traditional Balti meals, work alongside local artisans in hands-on workshops, and explore a region that has stayed off the usual tourist path. Every part of the hotel, from the stone walls to the wooden beams, was shaped by Balti craftspeople using skills passed down through their families.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Balti Welcome
The journey starts with a drive from Leh through Khardung La Pass and down into Nubra Valley before reaching Turtuk. A traditional Balti welcome waits at Virsa, followed by checking into a room built entirely by hand. An orientation session gives background on the culture and building methods used in the region. The afternoon is open for walking around the property or simply resting after the long drive. When the light begins to soften, a walk along the Shyok River shows off the landscape in a gentle way. Dinner happens at The Farmers' House with dishes made using traditional Balti recipes and local ingredients.
Meals: Dinner
Activities: Scenic Drive, Cultural Orientation, Sunset Walk
Day 2: Royal Heritage & Old Town
A morning walk to Farol Village starts the day before heading to the Balti Heritage Museum. The museum holds old coins, war shields, and family records that tell the story of the region. Lunch is served at The Khangsa before a guided walk through Yul, where stone pathways wind between very old buildings. The walk includes a stop at a 500-year-old wooden mosque that has survived all this time. Dinner takes place at Yabgo Palace with the local king, whose family ruled this area for more than a thousand years. The multi-course meal makes history feel immediate and real.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3: Living Traditions & Border Life
The morning is dedicated to learning either traditional weaving or wood carving from local artisans. A home-cooked lunch with a village family follows, where traditional dishes are prepared using recipes passed down through generations. The afternoon is open for relaxation or exploring the village at your own schedule. When evening comes, everyone gathers for a Balti mehfil with folk music, stories, and performances happening under the night sky. Dinner at The Farmers' House wraps up a day filled with new experiences and genuine connections.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Activities: Artisan Workshop, Village Home Lunch, Balti Mehfil
Day 4: Farm & Flora Farewell
The final morning includes a visit to local orchards where families grow apricots, apples, and mulberries. Guests pick fruit from the trees and try making jam with their harvest. A farewell lunch with buckwheat pancakes and local tea gives one last taste of Balti food. After lunch, checkout happens, and the journey back to either Hunder or Leh begins.
