More about this escape

Virsa Baltistan is a boutique hotel that took seven years to build using only traditional methods and materials from the surrounding area. The property sits in Turtuk, a village near the Pakistan border that was once an important stop on the ancient Silk Route. With just 14 rooms available, the experience feels small and personal. Guests eat traditional Balti meals, work alongside local artisans in hands-on workshops, and explore a region that has stayed off the usual tourist path. Every part of the hotel, from the stone walls to the wooden beams, was shaped by Balti craftspeople using skills passed down through their families.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Balti Welcome

The journey starts with a drive from Leh through Khardung La Pass and down into Nubra Valley before reaching Turtuk. A traditional Balti welcome waits at Virsa, followed by checking into a room built entirely by hand. An orientation session gives background on the culture and building methods used in the region. The afternoon is open for walking around the property or simply resting after the long drive. When the light begins to soften, a walk along the Shyok River shows off the landscape in a gentle way.
